DIY your TV Lift

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Recently I Googled TV lifts and found many different options. Perhaps the most surprising was the one listed under “Home Automations” offering instruction on how to “build a pop up TV lift cabinet using an off-the-shelf dresser drawers and an off-the-shelf pop up TV lift kit in about three hours, all for only $500.”

Don’t get me wrong; I’m all for the DIY trend and on smaller, less important projects; I might fully endorse such an undertaking.

However, most people who would consider an automated TV lift also enjoy watching their TV…and in order to watch it, it needs to work, right? Imagine, after your three hour “sweat equity” investment (not to mention whatever you invested in the dresser and your pricey plasma TV), your “home automation” project comes crashing down, TV and all, because the online instruction omitted a crucial step?

Why put yourself through the agony?

Today there are many reputable TV lift cabinet/console purveyors who will customize your TV lift cabinet to your specifications. Everything from the number of shelves you want in your cabinet, to the height at which you want your TV to “rest” when in use, to the color and design of the hardwood cabinetry for your TV lift.

By going through a professional, you also have options in mechanical operation and design, including motorized lifts, lifts that pivot, and lifts that drop down and retract back into the ceiling. Many manufacturers offer their TV lifts with rack and pinion operating units, while others offer telescopic technology for their TV lift systems. Almost universally, these manufacturers offer warranties on their TV lift units as well, which is why they are designed with structural integrity using high-quality components…not make-shift pieces and parts from the tool shed, or clearance furniture from a bog box store, as may be the case in the home-spun version.

Another benefit of working with a turn-key manufacturer verses the “do-it-yourself” option is that the furniture (cabinet or console) generally arrives fully assembled; no worries about “washer #22″ missing, or the wrong size screw for a key part of your “home automation” construction.

Do-It-Yourselfers beware: certain “projects” - including a safe, fully-functional TV lift - are best left to the professionals!

Satellite Tv Player - Watch Favorite Tv/vod Entertainment On Your Pc Without Missing Anything Again!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Understanding how a Satellite TV player works doesn’t require a college degree. Instead, think of it as a regular home TV-set only it doesn’t receive signals from the air through an antenna and convert them to audio/video. Simply put, this type of player only delivers audio/video media to a computer over an Internet connection. This can also be referred to IPTV (Internet protocol television). It allows you to watch Internet TV three ways: 1) Desktop, laptop, or hand-held computer, 2) TV screen, and 3) Cellular phone.

1. Computer screen such as, a desktop, laptop or hand-held like an ipod
2. TV screen
3. Cell phone screen.

Although somewhat similar to traditional television which retrieves signals through the air via an antenna or with the use of cable wires, you will find a greater variety with Internet TV media than home Cable/Satellite Television. However, what differentiates Internet TV from the traditional way is information (data) or media files such as audio, video, text, clips that can be sent over the Net as well as retrieved. This gives a basic idea what a Satellite TV media player is designed to do, which has nothing to do with pulling signals from the air or tapping into Satellite/Cable networks illegally.

Think of a Satellite TV player just like a home television set. Only in this case, it has the ability to access and stream 1000s of free Internet TV/Radio channels and VOD (video on-demand) quickly. Usually a channel will load and begin playing within 20 seconds after clicking on its link. Many of the big television networks that have popular shows, events, news, sports, and movies can be viewed on Internet TV media websites (owned and licensed by Internet media providers) that offer many independently produced programs which caters mostly to people with special interest.

Satellite TV players perform this task better through automation, without going to any TV/VOD websites, than any other gateway to Internet media. These type of players include directories such as “Category” and “Country” that contain many channels for easy access to media in a matter of seconds. Everything is in categorical and alphabetical order that saves time and this offers less confusion. For instance, if you wanted to watch a favorite TV show on FOX, you would simply click the “Country” directory. All the sub-directories with all the different Countries will appear in alphabetical order. Just click “US” to get a list of channels in alphabetical order. Just click a favorite channel, sit back and enjoy as it will play within seconds.

Subsequently, for everything to work properly requires an Internet broadband connection with a minimum speed of 500kbps. Higher the speed, better the overall performance. This can be accomplished when using either a DSL or High Speed connection. A laptop broadband card and router connection can be used also. A wifi connection will work but will have some limitation when trying to access channels with larger bandwidths.

The Internet offers many premium and HDTV channels, including VOD (free of charge) to everyone across the globe. Satellite TV players have the ability to access and stream both channel and VOD feeds without you going to various websites to manually access them. All of this saves loads of time and helps users access the media source immediately.

When a Satellite TV player streams a channels, it actually breaks the media file into smaller pieces and brings it right over a computer’s IP (Internet Provider) address then to the computer for quick viewing. There’s no waiting for a channel to finish downloading because the streaming process allows the user to watch a channel instantly, using a stand alone TV player or browser with a player embedded. Some of the most popular and standardized players include RealPlayer, QuickTime Player, and WMP–Windows Media Player which includes many features and exhibits more commercialism (advertisements). These players don’t cater to special interest groups who prefer more sports, movies, TV shows, Countries, languages, etc.

On the other hand, depending won hich Satellite TV player is of interest, it will be pre-loaded with channels and VOD that Internet TV/VOD enthusiasts enjoy most and want more of such as, sports, movies, adult entertainment, live television shows, access to all or specific Countries and languages, etc. With a simplistic design, good enhancements for more enjoyment and very user-friendly interface providing easy navigation, a Satellite TV media player offers the best gateway to gaining instant access to 1000s of free Internet channels and VOD.

Anyone can find a free or paid Satellite TV player over the Net to download to his/her computer and watch Internet media. However, many of them exhibit an unsafe environment which promotes adware/spyware or don’t work too well and not worth downloading. Top paid Satellite media players requires a small one-time downloading fee and caters more to a scam-free, risk-free environment offers more benefits and support.

How to Save Power and Lower Your Electric Bill

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

As energy costs continue to soar, many of us are looking for ways to lower electric bills. Also, as more and more of us are becoming conscious of the environment, we would like to find ways to save power simply to reduce damage power consumption does to the environment. The good news is that there are many ways to reduce electric bills and save power.

First, consider the obvious ways to lower electric bill totals in your home. For instance, if you are not in a room, turn off the light. Turning off a light in your home will save hundreds of watts of power consumption each day. Also, eliminate any lights that are not really needed in your home.

Another way to reduce electric bill amounts for your household is to raise the temperature on your thermostat when the air conditioner is running. In the winter, lower the temperature if your heat is electric. This will cause the air conditioner and furnace to run less often, thus saving you money on your electric bill. Statistics show that every degree you change the temperature will create up to a 3% change in energy costs. A couple of degrees will not likely change how comfortable you feel in your home, but they will make a big difference in your attempt to save power.

Now, there are also some helpful devices you can use to save power in your home. First, replace your incandescent light bulbs with the compact fluorescent bulbs you have been seeing. Yes, these bulbs cost a lot more than their incandescent counterparts, but they also last much, much longer. In fact, they last around 10 to 13 times longer than regular light bulbs. Additionally, they use around 1/3 as much electricity as regular bulbs. They will easily pay for themselves over a year as you notice that they reduce electric bill totals each month that you use them.

Another device you can install in your home to save power is the Power Save 1200. The Power Save 1200 will lower electric bill amounts by reducing the amount of power that is wasted by some of the appliances in your home. Many appliances, such as air conditioners, freezers, washer, vacuums, and fans, use inductive motors. These motors ask for electricity from the transformer every time they need to run. This process creates heat in the motors and the wiring. This heat is actually wasted energy, because it is created by electricity. The Power Save 1200 will store electricity in the home and release it to these motors when they are ready to run. This eliminates the heat in the motors and the wires, which can reduce electric bill totals as much as 25%.

Another device to use to save power is an electronic thermostat. How many times have you left home, only to remember that you forgot to turn the thermostat down or up, depending on the season? An electronic thermostat can be preprogrammed to change the temperature after you have left for work, and then change it again just before you come home. Also, it can lower or raise the temperature after you have gone to sleep at night, and then change it back around the time you need to wake up. This will save you substantial amounts of power by not wasting energy on heating or cooling your home when you do not need it to be heated or cooled.

While we are all facing higher electric bills than ever before, being proactive and taking these steps to save power can help. You can reduce electric bill amounts by utilizing a little common sense and a few new pieces of technology. The ability to save money and power is there, but it’s up to you to do something about it in your home.

Ken Potter is the founder and owner of http://www.USaveOnElectric.com, where you can buy the Power Save 1200, which can lower electric bills up to 25%. This site also carries the Power Save 3200 and Power Save 3400 Units for Commercial use.

Home Security Automation Essentials

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Home automation involves automation of many tasks. One of these is the security of your dwelling. Home automation security is an important feature for your safety and well being. Home automation security provides security and peace of mind for many homes and businesses. Basically, home automation systems make it look as though vacant homes and businesses are in fact occupied. This is achieved through the timed used of televisions, lights and other methods. Home automation systems can be the difference between your home being hit by a burglar and your home being passed over by one.

One can either use wireless technology or hardwired security systems. Wireless is gaining popularity in an attempt to do away with complicated and confusing wiring operations. Wireless transmitters, receivers, and controllers can add the convenience of wireless sensors. Using wireless transmitters and receivers you can easily place sensors in out of the way or hard-to-access areas, without having to run new wiring. Wireless security cameras are also extremely useful.

Hardwired security costs lesser but its installation is time consuming. It requires the ability to hide wires in walls for a neat installation. Wireless alarm systems, on the other hand, are more easily installed and can be added to or moved to a new location with ease. Typically, hardwired systems are installed during a new construction and are more reliable than their wireless counterparts.

Many types of security devices exist. Door alarms and emergency exit alarms are vital. Even though burglars may break in through windows, doors must be secured. Door alarms work on one of two types of systems: a closed circuit or an open circuit system. This same idea is also used in window alarms. In either if the circuit breaks or in the latter when the circuit completes upon the opening of a door, an alarm is sounded.

Security cams are also good. First you must decide whether you need an indoor or an outdoor system and whether or not to use closed-circuit or wireless cameras. Day or night use will also affect the type of camera you by, some have built in infra-red that allow them to ’see’ in the dark.

One can also install instant calling to specified numbers in case of a break in which will contact such numbers for help. Also other devices such as taped dog barking upon approach by an intruder can be installed. Adequate lighting is also important. One can put motion sensors lighting up the path if someone approaches your gateway. Keep burglars at bay with heat-sensitive motion sensors, door/window sensors, ear-piercing sirens, etc.

Essentially a home automation security system must be reliable, cost effective and deterrent. It must be able to give you a good night’s rest and assure your safety.

Tips On Best Home Automation Systems

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

When it comes to high-end whole house systems, they generally cost from $5,000 to $250,000. This price usually does not include installation fees, so take a good look at what the dealer is offering before agreeing to anything! When choosing to buy a high-end home automation system for your house you need to ensure it will be properly configured and installed, as these two areas can sometimes cost more than the system itself. There is no limit in what these systems can do, because, besides security and lighting, they can integrate any climate control, audio, video and entertainment systems your heart may desire. You can even get sprinkler and pool/spa control systems, so that your house becomes the most comfortable place on earth for you.

The various features and functions that high-end systems usually include need a rather complicated interface to the users. Otherwise, the control would be very complicated. Because a touch screen can have the buttons specially designed for each and every house, the best solution for the control of high-end systems is choosing the more expensive LCD technology the touch screens offer. The advantage is a plus in comfort to the users and to the programmers too. Other types of interfaces that have recently entered the market include keypad stations with built-in temperature sensors and intercoms. Interesting option I might add, as most of the manufacturers will soon choose to introduce this on a wide scale.

There are some types of high-end systems that come directly with sophisticated lighting control subsystems. Additionally to that, you will get all the key components for a complete home automation system that you can customize according to your needs and wishes. Other types of home automation systems are less expensive, but the truth of the matter is that the only thing you will get for such a small amount of money you invested is a security, lighting and temperature control package. You will have to add the other modules on your own expenses. It is very much like a Do-It-Yourself toolkit that you can play around with. Not to speak about the integrated control of audio and video gear! This may cost a small fortune, if you asked me.The fact is that not all people are fans of these DIY things. People are much more interested in pre-programmed or plug-and-play systems.

Therefore, before deciding upon a certain high-end system for your home, you must absolutely study the market in order to choose the solution that will best fit your house automation needs.

Smart Homes - The Future of Home Automation

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
When you hear the term “smart home” you may visualize a futuristic house or brand new mansion. However, with today’s new technologies and innovations, any homeowner can take advantage of either a few or multiple home automation services. Whether you are building a new house or looking to simplify daily life in your current home, with smart home integration, your options are nearly limitless. Once your new system is installed, you can relax knowing your security system, lighting, heating, and entertainment features will run like clockwork. How does it work? You choose the areas you wish to be “smart” and the automation service will equip the systems with timers, settings, and control panels, conveniently located throughout your home. For example, you may have your lighting automated so that with one remote control you can turn on, off, and dim any light fixture inside or outside. Also, you may set timers on the house’s lighting so that porch or living room lights turn on at a specific time and you walk into a safe, welcoming home. No longer will you get up out of bed to turn off lights that were forgotten. Similarly, your security system and heating and cooling can all be controlled from one location, making your family comfortable, safe, and energy efficient.

What choices are there for controlling the automation? You can select touch screens, remote controls, and online options. Want to change the heat setting while you are out of town? There are options for controlling your home automation system from a mobile phone or laptop. Prefer one central location that stays out of the reach of children? Have a touch screen installed for easy access.

What about customizing? When you take a look at today’s smart homes, you will find an entire house personalized to the family’s needs and wants. It may sound complex, but it is as simple as choosing a few custom settings. Name your 6 am settings “Good Morning” and the air conditioner will turn off, the lights will turn on, the alarm will turn off, and your coffee will brew. All before you’ve gotten out of bed.

Entertainment systems also fall under the list of items that can be controlled with a home automation system. You can also have home theatres complete with surround sound and multi-room speakers installed at the same time. Once your house is automated for practicality, you can look into investing in high quality entertainment and sound systems.

Take some time to look into home automation options. You are sure to find at least one feature that will make your family’s life simpler and safer. Customize your home to fit you and your family.

Home Automation: What does the future hold?

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Home automation now it is a technology that we know has changed and will not stop changing ever to be honest. It is one of those things that as long as technology stays on its course it will only get better and more sophisticated as the time moves on. Therefore people probably wonder where exactly it will be years from now. A lot of folks have let pop culture influence their perception of technology and the future. Now while it is interesting to see that some things that we have been in the movies have had an eerie coincidence with real life, for instance sci-fi characters from the 60s using hand communicators.

Something like this was the precursor to the cell phone for instance.

So the future of home automation holds so many different possibilities that you just could not believe if you just stand there without thinking. You just have to look at history and see how things like electricity was able to be controlled and used to provide power. People living years prior to this discovery scoffed at the idea of many of the automatic accessories that we rely heavily upon today. The one thing that has to be understood is that these things take time. Therefore it is incorrect to consider the world of sci-fi to be complete and utter fantasy all the time.

But the one thing you can’t do is hinge how fast and easy fiction makes these things look.

After all we are nearly ten years into the new decade and cars and buildings do not look all that different from when they did ten years ago for instance. It is all a work in progress so do not worry your house is not going to turn into something off of a science fiction movie right away. However when that day comes and it can provide you with all the comforts and frills you want it will be a special one. It will definitely not having over night but home automation is the future.

It will take care of many of your most basic tasks and will become more common as time goes.

As you can see with other technology once it proves to be more accessible to people who can buy into it. From there evolutionary changes will occur and while they may not be spot on with something the nature of Star Trek for instance it will indeed have a different look and feel than what we are accustomed to at this moment.

That is just the nature of the beast and home automation is no different from any other process once it gets going and finds a rhythm it is only going to get better and better nothing else will be able to compare to it plain and simple. Think of how awesome it will be to have a home that will do basically everything for you that you should not always have to stress about. So the future definitely holds a lot for automated technology and it is not slowing down.
